Bonnie Brown´s Portrait (July 31, 1938 – July 16, 2016)

Bonnie Brown Ring, one-third of one of Country Music’s most enduring family groups as a member of The Browns, passed away on July 16 at Baptist Hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas following complications from lung cancer. She was 77 years old.

Born July 31, 1938 in Sparkman, Arkansas, Brown became enamored with music at an early age – thanks to the exposure she had to it from watching her older siblings, Maxine and James Edward. The two performed together, earning a hit in 1954 with “Looking Back To See.” Upon her graduation from high school, Bonnie joined her siblings, expanding their duet into a trio.

They began performing together on The Louisiana Hayride on KWKH in Shreveport, which led to appearances on ABC-TV’s Ozark Jubilee. Chet Atkins and RCA came calling soon after, and the Browns found themselves on the chart with hits such as “I Take The Chance” and “I Heard The Bluebirds Sing.” James Edward (now known as Jim Ed) was drafted in 1957, but the trio still managed to find time to record when he was on leave.

The Western Flyers Debut Their Hot Take On Texas Swing With "Wild Blue Yonder" July 29th

In 1940s Texas, if you wanted to court a girl after a long day on the Texas oil rigs, you sought out the nearest dancehall. Dusty, gin-soaked, and boisterous, the hall was driven by the Western Swing it bore; jazz, blues and swing standards melded with cowboy songs and electrifying old-time fiddle tunes.

Legendary fiddler and band leader Bob Wills was king in this world and the dancehalls and theaters of Texas were buzzing with great fiddlers and singers, creating a new sound that would define Southwestern roots music for decades to come.

More than seventy-five years later, The Western Flyers’ debut album, Wild Blue Yonder, explodes with the influence of this storied genre, and if Bob Wills was listening off-stage he’d be smiling in approval. Internationally-renowned guitar master Joey McKenzie drives the train with his powerful rhythm, reigning National Swing Fiddle champion Katie Glassman’s improvisation astounds, and world-class upright bassist Gavin Kelso adds fuel to the fire. A blending of tradition and innovation, Wild Blue Yonder is a singular music experience; a fresh take on a venerable American art form performed by three virtuosos of the genre.

"Special Consensus is a superb bluegrass outfit in a classic vein but with more than enough modern sensibilities to attract every ear in this now pleasantly fractionating genre. The vocals are spotless, the playing as shiny as a newly minted penny, and music like this is the reason people come to love bluegrass… Special Consensus approaches this hallowed American musical form with boundless energy and an aesthetic reverence that tickles the ribs, tugs at the heart, and puts a restless two-step in boots and bare feet. The lead cut, Signs, is emblematic of the entire [new] CD, bursting with high spirits, energy refusing to sit still, precision so tight you can set your watch by it, and pure musicality so infectious that there lives nary a soul that will be able to turn its born and bred ears from tilting leeward to get a better listen..." ~ Mark S. Tucker, The Folk & Acoustic Music Exchange.

Shenandoah: "Good News Travels Fast" (2016). New Album.

Listen to and Download on Amazon

Some have advocated that hillbilly music in the 90s was the golden age of music. At that time, melodies were eternally memorable and artists were distinctive in their voices and mannerisms. Few plagiarized tropes and conveyor-belt made tunes.

And you can't talk about 90s hillbilly without mentioning Shenandoah. Constantly on heavy rotation across the airwaves were their hit songs such as "Ghost in This House," "See If I Care," "Next to You, Next to Me," and "If Bubba Can Dance (I Can Too)." What's most interesting is that two out of the group's 5 #1 hit records ("Church on Cumberland Road" and "Sunday in the South") were somehow tied to religion. Further, cuts such as "Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting," "Building a Home," and "What Children Believe" have either Christian-insinuated themes or Biblical-derived motifs. Nevertheless, after nearly 30 years, Shenandoah has finally cut their first full-fledged Gospel album released via Daywind Records, "Good News Travel Fast."

Hackensaw Boys: "Charismo" (2016). New Album.

Listen to and Download on Amazon

Charismo is the Hackensaw Boys record you’ve been waiting to hear. The 11-track album feels like the zenith release of the band’s 17 years, gathering their diverse life experiences and myriad of roots influences, and crystallizing them into a magnum opus on the Hackensaw way of being. Traditional Appalachian and Delta music lay the groundwork, but it’s injected with a heavy dose of the contemporary, good-times-roll kind of spit and vinegar the band has become known for over the years.

Produced by Larry Campbell – who has lent his talents to Bob Dylan, Levon Helm, and countless others – Charismo sees the band reeled in and slightly refined, though still as spirited as ever. The songs (all written by longtime Hackensaws David Sickmen and Ferd Moyse) are tinged with an attitude of scrappy resilience, spinning tales and metaphors of everyday, working class struggles and triumphs. With Campbell’s production, the Hackensaw’s somewhat casual, porch-front aesthetic is sharpened around the edges, focusing in on the simple beauty of their melodies and the earnestness in their delivery.

Angie and the Deserters: "West of the Night" (2016). New Album.

Featuring the soulful hillbilly rock´n´roll voice and lyrics of Angie Bruyere.

The band at present come out of Southern California but all of Angie’s band are lifetime rock´n´roll musicians from the UK. Luke Bossendorfer – Guitar and Vocals, formally with the Quire Boys, Glimmer and Bubble. Gaz Ivin – Bass and Vocals, formally with The Fitz, Sucker Punch and Glimmer and Gary, Bull Dog, Taylor – Drums, formally with Tank, Members of The Replacements and Husker Du and Reeves Gabrels (David Bowie, Tin Machine).

Angie’s song writing and influences, such as Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Gram Parsons and others, match a perfect chemistry with the boys history of rock n roll. As with the Rolling Stones, when the English play huillbilly it can work out very well. Walking the fence between hillbilly and rock n roll in the way southern rockers have done, Angie manages to keep one foot in her traditional love of soulful hillbilly song writing and the other in on outlaw hillbilly.

homas Mooney, Editor-in-chief of New Slang Lbk, a music blog focused on the thriving Lubbock music scene, states,” It’s the closest thing to Turnpike Troubadours in some time. Close your eyes and maybe, you can hear the same wiry twang in Cordero that you heard in Evan Felker years ago. The comparisons don’t end there. There’s the piercing interplay between guitar and fiddle. The honest longing for intimacy, inevitable heartbreak, and the occasional summertime fling that sprinkle their way through songs.” Founded in 2012 by childhood friends and college roommates, Cleto Cordero and Jason Albers, Flatland Cavalry is determined to take the Lubbock music scene (and the state of Texas) by storm with their refreshing original sound.

The sound of the award-winning group Town Mountain can best be described as traditional bluegrass, albeit with a rough-hewn side to it that is not too slick or glossy. They are a band of the here-and-now, yet they have a groove that is based on the bluesy and swinging sounds explored by the first generation of bluegrass pioneers of the last century. With the success of their latest album, Leave The Bottle, the word is out with some of their best reviews yet.

“Thank god that Town Mountain are around to blow a hole in all the genre-juggling games of which music writers like myself are so fond,” said Devon Leger, of Ed Helms’ The Bluegrass Situation. “They play bluegrass. Period. They play it hard, they play it fast, and they play it like their fingers are bleeding and their picks are breaking.”

Pullin' Strings live, play and sometimes work in Greene County, GA. But we might be doin' one thing or another in any one place or another...

We've been playin' bluegrassy tunes together since the summer of '09. Our history starts back in Union Point, GA, about twelve years ago, when Doc showed up at a practice where Doty and Sib were playin' in a rock and roll band. We weren't doin' any bluegrass at that point, just blues and rock n' roll. We started out on "Turn On Your Lovelight," by the Grateful Dead, Doc stepped up to the mike for fun, and the rest is history.

Even though the three of us have spent time apart, formed and disbanded several groups, we've always come back together at some point to just sit around, pick and grin and sing songs we like. We decided when we got together in '09 that if it wasn't gonna be fun for us, we weren't gonna waste any time with it.

Pattee, who has been performing in Chattanooga since the mid-'80s in various folk and bluegrass bands, plays guitar, mandolin, and clawhammer banjo as well as sings.

She also writes beautifully personal songs with compelling melodies. The two have different, but complementary, writing styles that make this musical partnership shine. Their momentum has built and taken them to radio, tv, coffee houses, restaurants, festivals, and concert venues including the Nightfall series this Summer. Their shared passion for Americana continues to push their creativity and reach as a fine example of home grown Tennessee music.

The Boxcars members:

Adam Steffey

An East Tennessee native, he found a place in the Tennessee-Virginia border area’s thriving bluegrass scene in short order, serving early stints with the Lonesome River Band (Tyminski was his replacement there) and then helping to found the near legendary group, Dusty Miller, along with Barry Bales and guitarist Tim Stafford. The three jumped to the big time together when Alison Krauss recruited them into Union Station, and for nearly seven years, Steffey lived the life of a high profile musician, as the band earned Grammy awards and IBMA trophies, toured extensively, made national TV appearances and recorded albums that reached far beyond the core bluegrass audience. Yet by 1998, the restless side of Steffey’s spirit made itself felt when he left the group and, after helping to lay plans for what would become Mountain Heart, joined bluegrass gospel favorites The Isaacs—a setting in which he played a different, though no less important role.

Shadow Mountain Band: "Shine" (2016). New Album.

Listen to and Download on Amazon

The band began several years ago as a hillbilly music jam session in the garden behind Pappy and Harriet’s Palace, an historic roadhouse in Pioneertown, CA. Crowds began to gather around to hear the mountain-style harmonies and old-time tunes. The management of Pappy and Harriet’s began coming out to listen and soon asked the jammers to come in and play inside for the restaurant crowd. Within a few months, they were joined by Banning, CA fiddler Billy Rhea Bell, and Pioneertown resident Johnny Ray Martin on the mountain-style autoharp (an instrument you seldom hear outside of Appalachia), and premier fiddler Bobby Furgo from Yucca Valley.

The group was rounded out when Steve and Darlene’s son, Damian Lester, known around the farm as ‘Dooley’, joined the band on acoustic bass, and brilliant, soft-spoken Gar Robertson added his talents on mandolin, dobro, and vocals. Shadow Mountain also often features guests, including smokin’ mandolinist Mark Ross from 29 Palms, and other friends and musical family members comin’ through town.

Hot Club Of Cowtown: "Midnight On Ther Trail" (2016). New Album.

Listen to and Download on Amazon

The Hot Club of Cowtown’s new album “Midnight on the Trail” is a vintage mix of 12 Western swing songs and cowboy ballads hand-collected to reflect the spirit and joy of the American West. Utterly danceable, romantic and rustic, these songs truly represent the Cowtown of the Imagination, a source of inspiration for the band since it first began.

Since its beginnings in the late 1990s, Hot Club of Cowtown’s star has continued to rise as its reputation for jaw-dropping virtuosity and unforgettable live shows has become the band’s global brand. Lauded for its “down-home melodies and exuberant improvisation” (The Times, London), the Hot Club has always woven a combination of seemingly disparate styles together to its own magical effect, setting up camp “at that crossroads where country meets jazz and chases the blues away” (The Independent), and “conscious always that above all else, the music is for dancing and an old-fashioned good time” (New York Times).

This is the original album from Twist of Fate, a rock band of 4 guys from Florida, who dreamed of recording this material when it was first written and performed in the late 1990's and early 2000's. We couldn't afford to record these songs then, but there's no time like the present. This is a labor of love for the music itself and it was only possible due to our long lasting friendship between the four of us. Classic influences of old and new, beautiful vocal harmonies hardly heard in today's mainstream rock, chiming-crunching guitars, punchy drums and bass, plus a few other musical surprises all featured in this original set.

Tradition and innovation provide the interlocking roots of bluegrass and its descendants, a lively dance of elements skipping comfortably from ancient jigs to radio ditties to spacious experimentation.

The Infamous Stringdusters joyously embody and carry forward the spirit of Bill Monroe, John Hartford, Earl Scruggs, David Bromberg and other originators in their skilled embrace of this music’s twin gravitational pulls, moving dexterously between homespun legacy and creative expansion, a band firmly grounded in what has come before as they grow strong into tomorrow.

“What we do is a hybrid of the improvisational and bluegrass worlds.  We take a lot of pride in that.  While our music is our own concept, hopefully it does justice to the amazing components of the bluegrass world,” says Stringdusters Chris Pandolfi.  “We love to present what we do but we always call on the bluegrass world of chops, technique, and traditions.”

Growing up with that music in their ear certainly influenced how they play and write as evidenced by this album.

Jason Lee McKinney is a two time nationally signed recording artist, powerhouse vocalist, and songwriter. McKinney blends a snarling musical underbelly full of equal parts trained prowess and an almost out of control piss and vinegar attitude; soaring sing along hook melodies, with lyrics that are raw and raucous, reflective and radiant; simultaneously weaving a narrative that is both uniquely his and everyman s story.

Lisha's Leaving  comes off a double-album  Play Something You Believe .  The album was cut entirely live, both the electric side (Vol. 1) and Acoustic (Vol. 2). Volume 1 was tracked and mixed at Ardent Studios in Memphis. McKinney wanted a derivative sound of some of the great 70 s albums, and thought what better place than Ardent in Memphis, the place where it all began. Vol. 2 was tracked live, with mic bleed and the whole bit, at the historic Lovett Auditorium.

Laurie Lewis & The Right Hands: "The Hazel and Alice Sessions" (2016). New Album.

Listen to and Download on Amazon

In the mid-1960s, two women from very different origins (Alice Gerrard from the West Coast, Hazel Dickens from West Virginia) blew apart the male-dominated bluegrass world. With singing that was closer to the hard-edged style of early Monroe and Stanley Brothers bluegrass, Hazel and Alice challenged the expectations of women in bluegrass, and blazed a trail still followed not only by the many great women of bluegrass who came after, but by stars of Americana and country like Emmylou Harris and The Judds. Ten years later, in the mid-1970s in California, fiddler, singer, songwriter, and bandleader Laurie Lewis was looking for inspiration. As Lewis told the Berkeleyside, “I had heard ballsy women singers on the local bluegrass scene, but I hadn’t heard other women doing that on recordings.” Chancing on a copy of Hazel and Alice’s first LP, Lewis knew she’d found her muses.

Tim has brought together national champion pickers with a selection of Kansas City’s best Jazz and classical musicians to tell this true story of Ozark history.
