Michaela Anne: "Bright Lights and the Fame" (2016). New Album.

Listen to and Download on Amazon

Upon releasing her 2014 album, Ease My Mind (Kingswood Records), singer-songwriter Michaela Anne garnered considerable acclaim for her introspective songwriting. The New York Times praised the “plain-spoken songs of romantic regret and small-town longing” and the Village Voice listed it among its Top 5 Country Albums of the year. Since then, however, this once-solitary diarist has transformed herself into a gregarious storyteller. Michaela Anne has discovered her inner extrovert.

Bright Lights and the Fame (Kingswood Records), recorded at Farmland Studio in Nashville, is full of sharp observations and easy wit, with several upbeat numbers tailor-made for the dance floor of the nearest honky-tonk. While there are gentler, more personal aspects to it that recall her earlier work, Bright Lights and the Fame displays a newfound brashness, starting with the album’s cover image, in which Michaela Anne sports a bedazzled denim outfit, a vintage find that’s perfect for catching the spotlight.

Her voice is filtered through a mix of hard wrought emotion and soothing sensitivity, the kind that breeds great balladry and stirs the senses simultaneously.”

“To make it in this business, you either have to be first, great or different,” says living legend Loretta Lynn. “And I was the first to ever go into Nashville, singin’ it like the women lived it.”

Loretta first arrived in Nashville 55 years ago, signing her first recording contract on February 1, 1960, and within a matter of weeks, she was at her first recording session. A self-taught guitarist and songwriter, Lynn became one of the most distinctive performers in Nashville in the 1960s and 1970s, shaking things up by writing her own songs, many of which tackled boundary-pushing topics drawn from her own life experiences as a wife and mother.

Listen to and Download on Amazon

Music was, is, and always will be my therapy. In my most painful and dark moments, I turn to music to help calm and heal my soul.

This song has lived inside of me since I was a child. When my parents divorced and my father decided to leave, I felt like I wasn't good enough for him to stick around. I felt unworthy, unlovable and had no sense of self-love. It took a lifetime to heal my inner wounds but it all began with the single thought process that it wasn't my fault and that I didn't deserve to be abandoned. I realized that my father's decisions were based on his own inner damage from his childhood that never got addressed. He needed to find his way to happiness, which unfortunately meant leaving his kids behind. I never stopped loving him and cherish the brief moments in time that I had with him. The night that I found out he died, I had a gig and felt like it was the first time he was hearing me sing. I felt his presence and know he was smiling. Love and forgiveness conquers all pain.

Sometimes fate or destiny lets you know when you’re in the right place at the right time, doing what you’re supposed to be doing.

This Life of Mine, her 5th studio album, is the culmination of a time in Lane’s personal and creative life that can truly be described as a roller coaster ride that began after she was sidelined with a foot and ankle injury that took several years and multiple surgeries to repair.

Vicky Emerson: "Wake Me When the Wind Dies Down" (2016). New Album.

Listen to and Download on Amazon

In the middle of June 2015, Vicky stepped off the plane onto the tarmac and it was blue sky for as far as the eye could see, big blue Montana sky. Putting two feet on the ground, she took in the mountains in the distance and raised her face to the sun. Then the wind took her by surprise, whirled her hair, billowed her skirt, and threw her completely off balance.  For three days that fierce wind didn’t let up until she boarded her plane home to Minneapolis.

It was on this trip that Vicky recognized the parallel between that Montana wind and her own life. “I am a wife and mother to two small children, and most days I feel swept away by the complete chaos and incredible love that they bring into my life. The physical feeling of the strong wind that chased me around all weekend was the first time I could make a tangible comparison to how I was feeling emotionally.  I realized in Montana that letting myself succumb to the wind, rather than resist and attempt to control every detail in my life, could bring me some much needed peace.”

Violet Delancey grew up in Southern California, close to the clubs and recording studios where artists like Gram Parsons carved out their own brand of country music during the 1970s. Even so, it took a move to London — where Delancey studied Mythology as a graduate student, then switched gears by launching into a songwriting career — for her to fall head-over-heels in love with the music of her home country.

Maybe it was the distance from home that fired up her muse. Whatever the reason, Delancey began writing her own music during her time abroad, first as a California ex-pat living halfway across the world, and later as a new resident of Nashville, TN. She moved to Nashville in late 2013, drawn to the same city that had energized many of her favorite artists. She wanted to drink from the same well that had fueled her influences — to take the songs she’d written in an East London flat and perform them.

"Fame can be a myopic beast. Whatever first lands a person in the spotlight is the thing most likely to keep attracting attention ever after. Throughout Vince Gill's late-'80s-to-late-'90s commercial heyday in country's mainstream, it was his sensitive ballads — many with adult-pop sheen, some with modern honky-tonk melancholy, all sold by the lustrous anguish of his singing — that served as his primary calling card. His other strengths took a backseat. Now, Gill is in a unique position, having reached the phase in his career where he's feted for lifetime achievements (most notably with an induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame) and still possessing the backing of a major label and the drive to refine his musicianship. He's spent the past decade indulging his varied interests and flexing his chops with a string of albums spanning bluegrass and blues-rock, a Western-swing side gig, a guitar-centric outing, a throwback country collaboration with a celebrated steel guitarist, and plenty of other ventures.

"A certain musical and spiritual condition defines Wynonna Judd's first album with her band The Big Noise — not to mention the first album of original material in 13 years from one of country music's supreme redheads. That quality is joy. It dominates, not just because Judd is performing with a small group led by her husband, the drummer and producer Cactus Moser, letting loose on songs she hand-selected because she liked them rather than out of concern for padding her remarkable roster of hits. Wynonna & The Big Noise lays bare the joy that is Judd's most potent gift as a vocalist.

"Joy is the happiness that doesn't depend on what happens," the Benedictine monk David Steindl-Rast once said; as platitudes go, that's a useful one. Applied to music, though, it takes on a different meaning.

At last count, she has written over three thousand songs, all of which are equally superb. There in was my dilemma, to select the ones that spoke to my emotions and attempt to sing them with as much authenticity and sincerity as they deserve.

I have been asked many times throughout my career to record an entire album of her music, but in my heart and mind, I never felt I could ever do her music or performances justice. So in the end, while making the decision to record this tribute album of eleven of my favorites, I decided to sing the story songs because they resonated with me the most.
