Wyatt Rice & Dan Menzone Alliance: "Something Out Of The Blue" (2016). New Album.

Listen to and Download on Amazon

Fans of acoustic guitar music should be well acquainted with the name Wyatt Rice. He was first spotlighted as an original member of the Tony Rice Unit. He has been featured on numerous recordings and videos, including his solo album "Newmarket Gap" and "Picture In a Tear" with his own band, Wyatt Rice & Santa Cruz; and despite being an adventurous banjoist, a composer, and a recording artist (he can claim four albums with his former group Traver Hollow and two solo albums), Dan Menzone remains unfamiliar to most bluegrass fans. As Dr. Ted Olson states in the liner notes of the duo's new album, "By combining the individual and collective strengths of two musicians who have never sought the limelight—musicians who for years have been quietly yet resolutely dedicated to their separate visions of the possibilities for bluegrass music—the Rice-Menzone Alliance is truly greater than the sum of its parts. And on Something Out Of The Bluethey truly merge their visions. The music on this album is at the same time workmanlike and magical—it is painstakingly crafted and yet offers much that is truly surprising, something out of the blue."

Buddy Melton and Milan Miller: "Secrets Dreams and Pretty Thing'" (2016). New Album.

Listen to and Download on Amazon

Tucked away in the Smoky Mountains of Western North Carolina, Waynesville is the kind of town where everyone knows everyone. Small enough that it seems strange that Buddy Melton and Milan Miller would be in their late twenties before they ever crossed paths. Making the scenario even more unlikely, they both took their first music lessons from local Bluegrass musician Bill Phillips, and had more mutual friends than could be easily counted. Buddy’s mother was even Milan’s second grade teacher.

All of those near misses finally came together one evening in 1998 at a jam session hosted by a local coffee shop. Milan recounts, “This soft-spoken, unassuming guy steps in and starts to sing, and out of his mouth came the purest tenor voice I had ever heard. He seemed to have an unending vocal range. I thought to myself, I need to know more about this fellow.”

We seem to read each others’ mind in terms of harmony, too. It’s so easy to sing with him.”

Every now and then a musical endeavor starts as a lark, but clicks so well, it takes on a life of its own — one that deserves to be nurtured. That’s what North of Nashville bandmates Jay Basiner and Andrew Martelle discovered when they began duetting in-between gigs with their regular band, a Maine outfit called This Way.

Pursuing their passion for honky-tonk and the Highwaymen, they quickly found themselves outdrawing their regular gigs — and having far more fun. They finally gave in to the muse and made it official. And now, they’re releasing their self-titled debut, an album that revels in the gospel of Willie, Waylon, Kris and Cash, as well as their musical brothers and sisters from across the vast Americana landscape. North of Nashville (April 29, 2014), features 10 tracks filled with Martelle’s fiddle and mandolin and Basiner’s lead vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica and percussion, and of course, their lively harmonies.

The Cactus Blossoms: "You´re Dreaming" (2016). New Album.

Listen to and Download on Amazon

When my brother and I started making music as The Cactus Blossoms there wasn't a big plan. We cut our teeth performing some well known and obscure country songs that were popular or unpopular pre-1960, partly out of curiosity and deep appreciation, but mostly because it was fun. Early on we were given a residency at the Turf Club in St. Paul, Minnesota. We got a band together and it became our weekly practice-in-public where we would pull out every song we could think of, no matter how well we knew it. It was our first chance to play all night and do whatever we wanted. Over the course of our year and a half at the Turf Club our repertoire had snowballed into an amalgam of original songs and a bunch of gut wrenching, tongue-in-cheek heartbreakers, that were 30 years older than us. Not everyone could tell what was new and what was old, and it didn't really matter. People just seemed to enjoy it. That's when the wheel got going and gave the illusion of spinning backwards. We weren't born in the wrong era. We just got into some music from a different era and found a way to make it our own.
