Eli Buddy understands that while mainstream country music changes directions yet again, it is of the utmost importance to hold onto the roots of what made him fall in love with this genre at a very young age. Very diverse musical influences helped pave the way to Eli Buddy’s songwriting and singing abilities. Influences that range from Hank Williams Sr and George Jones to the Texas Tornadoes andZZ top. Crowds at any given show are quickly won over and taken captive by the genuine and expert musical abilities of both Eli Buddy and the Sweet Mesquite Band.
Eli Buddy was born in San Antonio, Texas. At a very young age Eli however, Eli and his immediate family moved to Chicago, IL. Although Chicago brought many fond friendships and experiences, it was always in Texas that he knew he belonged. At the age of 6 his father purchased his first acoustic guitar, fondly named Dusty that he still owns to this day. Eli began writing music at the age of 8. Instrumentals became an obsession of his to compose. Singing and performing for his family and friends at every opportunity. Beginning at a very young age Eli’s father was the true influence in developing his ability to sing. At the age of 12 Eli happily returned to Texas where he continued to write and sing and play music. Music became his life. Listening, studying and absorbing music of all sorts, lyrics and the emotions conveyed, he continued to fall deeper in love with Country Music of old times.
After several small garage bands, Eli buddy formed the Sweet Mesquite Band. A band comprised of musical veterans with roots in genres ranging from Rock, Tejano and Country. Lead guitarist David Mcanelly; from in Yancey, Tx, toured with many rock groups in the 90’s. In his spare time, “Hondo” Dave still continues to provide musical education to the youth in his home town. Bassist Joe Villasana; from Sabinal, Tx, has toured for years on the Texas Country circuit with many Texas Country bands such as The Rough River Band. Raul “Earl” Villareal, the bands percussionist who hails from Hondo, Tx has honed his craft by touring and playing with great Tejano singers such as Jonny Martinez. John Paul Munoz, the newest member and bands harmonica, accordion and mandolin player wow’s crowds with his creatively crafted musical abilities.
They look excitedly to the future, on the brink of releasing their first album which is due out in January of 2018. This album was expertly mixed and mastered by Tony Gonzales, a legend in the business who has also mastered for Texas Legends such as Willie Nelson. Their first single and music video, “Tequila” was released January 2017 and has already received an outstanding reception from the Country, Texas Country and even the Tejano community. This single features Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winner Mr Flaco Jimenez. An intoxicating song that is not easily forgotten once heard.
