Growing up in Houston, TX, Don Vickers grew up with music as a staple in his life from his mother singing in the Houston Symphony Choir to family gatherings filled with acoustic jams and quartet concerts right in his grandmother's living room. At the age of 12, Don got his first guitar and life as he knew it would never be the same. Don was going to be the next heavy metal guitar superstar!!!
Well, after many guitar lessons and countless hours of driving his parents crazy with all of the noise and distortion, Don finally learned to play his first song all the way through without all the "binks" and wrong notes. Don has come a long way since then and though he still thinks it would be cool to be in a rock band, hillbilly music is where his heart is! With many influences from various genres of music, Don Vickers has emerged as a naturally gifted vocalist and one of the hottest lead guitar players in the area.
Having fronted his own hillbilly cover band, Misbehavin’, for over a decade, Don has been packing in the dance halls in Houston and surrounding areas, while breaking attendance records along the way and becoming one of the most sought after bands in the area. In the Summer of 2011, Don decided he was ready to take the next step in his career and emerge as a solo artist. Though he had written some original songs in the early days of his career, Don had always dreamed of recording a full length album. In the Summer of 2013, that dream came true! Don released his debut CD, “Halfway There.” Recorded in Huntsville, TX at Hilltrax Studio, The “Halfway There” CD is a unique blend of Texas hillbilly music filled with chicken pickin’, piano, fiddle, steel guitar, dobro, and did we mention chicken pickin???
Don made his first live radio debut in December 2012, on the Texas Red Dirt Roads with Justin Frazell" on 95.7 The Ranch. Don showcased two singles from his album, "Halfway There," and his live performance was syndicated nationwide on more than 20 affiliated broadcasting stations. In 2013, Don's live radio performances included Big Star 97 in Fort Worth on location at Filthy McNasty's Saloon and Whiskey Girl Saloon and Radio Free Texas for BIGFest at Cheatham Street Warehouse in San Marcos. Though the album was never officially released to radio, the "Halfway There" CD is receiving airplay on various radio stations in Texas and even abroad, including France and Sweden. The album also earned Don a nomination for Best New Male Vocalist for the 2014 Big Star 97 Music Awards. In February 2016, Don was mentioned in an article on Key Music News titled, Bad Ass Guitar Players Part II. On March 12, 2016, Don made his first live radio debut in his hometown at 90.1 KPFT Houston. Don showcased 4 tracks off his upcoming album which included his first single, "When the Hag's On." The single, which was written and recorded in 2015, was released to the public on February 25, 2016, and was originally scheduled to be released to radio in early April 2016. Due to the tragic passing of Merle Haggard, Don decided to go back into the studio to recut one line of the song. The recut version of the single was rescheduled for release at a later date as Don wanted to make sure and give appropriate time to Mr. Haggard's family and friends out of respect for his memory, his legacy, and his gift to us all. The radio release date for the recut version of "When the Hag's On" is scheduled for April 28, 2016. The album, which is being recorded at Stormy Cooper Media in Houston, TX, is expected to be released late Summer.
